ABOUT THIS COURSE

While the Essentials Course covers how to understand and implement Group Policy, this "Group Policy 2.0 Catch-up" class is the next step. Microsoft has made recent advancements to its technology portfolio, including an updated GPMC, ADMX/ADML files, a "Central Store", new configuration items for Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista , Windows 7, and Windows, and the 21 new Group Policy Preference Extensions (which work great on XP, Vista, Win7, and Server!) .

In this course, you'll pick up where the Essentials class leaves off. You'll learn:

  • All the updated GPMC topics, including: Filters, Comments, and Starter GPOs
  • Creating a management station with Remote Server Administration Tools
  • Group Policy Preference Extensions: 21 new features no admin should be without
  • Creating and managing ADMX, ADML files, and the Central Store
  • New Windows Vista & Windows 7-specific Group Policy goodies
  • All Windows Vista & Windows 7 Group Policy engine changes
  • Troubleshooting Windows Vista & Windows 7 Group Policy
  • Managed desktop changes, including Roaming Profiles, Offline Files, Sync Manager, and changes with Windows Vista & Windows 7

This class is another intensive workout dedicated to making your world run smoother, reducing complexity, and taking control of your environment. These are two days of information NO administrator should ever be without. All the technology we discuss in this class is 100% free to use--however, caution is needed, because the new GP 2.0 world doesn't function like the GP 1.0 world. Come to this class to learn the ropes and be prepared for the GP Preferences, Windows Vista/Win7, and Server 2008.

HOW IS THIS COURSE DIFFERENT THAN OUR OTHER COURSES

Since this is the GP 2.0 Catch-Up class, there are LOTS of areas that are different.

This is Part II in a three part series of Group Policy. (The Essentials class is Part I, this GP 2.0 Catch-up Class is Part II, and the Advanced Class is Part III.)

The top reasons to take this class (as opposed to our other classes) would be:

  • This is the class to learn the 21 new superpowers of the GP Preferences (which work with XP and onward).
  • This is the class to learn Vista/Win7/Windows Server 2008 changes.
  • This is the class to learn about ADMX/ADML files and the Central Store.
  • This is the class to learn about how to Troubleshoot Vista and Win7.
  • This is the class to learn about how to create a Managed Desktop for Vista and Win7.

WHAT STUDENTS NEED

  •  Prerequisites for the Catch-up class:
    • Students should first take the GP Essentials class or have equivalent knowledge. Students should be able to create and manage GPOs with link properties, understand how to perform security filtering, how to perform loopback processing, and how to create WMI filters. If students do not have knowledge of these concepts they may have trouble skipping right to the "GP 2.0 Catch-up" and "GP Advanced" courses.
  • About Hands-On Labs
    • While not strictly required, this class is enhanced if the attendees bring their own laptop to class. This is so we can perform real-world workshop experiments to solidify the concepts learned during the lecture and demonstrations. Each attendee should come to class with a laptop with at least the following specifications:
      • Windows XP or greater
      • Llocal administrative logon rights
      • Pentium III at 500 Mhz (Pentium 4 at 1Ghz or Pentium Centrino at 1Ghz Recommended)
      • 2GB RAM Required (3-4 GB RAM STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
      • 45GB free hard drive space
      • USB 2.0 ports that are unlocked such that we can install our lab environment
Students should not bring laptops to class without these requirements, or else they cannot participate in the hands-on labs.
