Testimonials

“ Even after working with GPO's for several years now, the training was of great value to me. I did not regret [flying in from Europe] and joining the training for one second. On the one hand I got the confirmation that I was on the right track developing our current set of GPO's and on the other hand I learned a lot of new useful things. I can't wait to start with the preparations. ”

Frank Verheyen, Henkel International

“ I’m a [Federal] employee who took your course through [our IT offices] a couple of years ago (or less). Just wanted to say thanks so much for the excellent training because I finally had a chance to use it in depth for the first time (had done a few MINOR GPO tasks previously) and was able (with SOME guidance from others) to do what I needed to do based on what I learned in your class. FYI, we had to apply (with some editing) NIST policies to our PCs and I’m really grateful for having had the training with you because it came in VERY handy during this crunch to comply with OMB mandates to do this by Feb 4, 2008. Keep up the good work and I’ll encourage my staff to consider your training the next time you are in our neighborhood. ”

Jane, Federal Employee

“ After hearing Jeremy speak today about Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection, I was immediately able to see how I can save my company time and resources with PC deployments and redeployments. After working with Jeremy’s labs for the GPPEs [from the Group Policy 2.0 class] I can see many realworld applications that I can put into production immediately. ”

Why do I need advanced knowledge?

The Essentials course will give you a strong foundation in how to use Group Policy. But this course dives even deeper and gives you tools to lock down your systems, and helps you fine tune your skills and deploy the specific settings you need. This course covers both XP and Windows 7 topics.

Who should take this course?

This is the perfect class if you've ever taken the Group Policy Essentials class and/or our Group Policy 2.0 Catchup class. This is the "capper" of information that isn't in any of the other classes.

What material does this course cover?

In a nutshell, you’ll learn the following topics:

1.Class Vote:

a.  How to lock down your computers to make them more secure and completely prevent changes

or     b. Microsoft AGPM (Advanced Group Policy Management)

2. How to leverage third-party tools to implement Group Policy changes faster

3. How to troubleshoot issues on desktops and servers using free add-on tools

4. How to implement specific Registry punches and deal with third-party Registry tools

5. How to leverage a test lab to make sure you work smartly and safely

Even though this course covers both XP and Win7 topics, you don’t need to have specifically taken the Group Policy Catch-up training to excel at this course (but it is recommended.)

HOW IS THIS COURSE DIFFERENT THAN OUR OTHER COURSES

Let's recap our other courses first:
  • You've got the "core knowledge" with our Essentials training. Core stuff you need to know for XP and later, including Windows 7.
  • You've got the catch-up training (for Vista/Win7/Server 2008/GP Preferences) with our GP 2.0 Catch-up course.
Now, let's do even more interesting stuff with our new Group Policy super-knowledge!
This course helps you really SOLVE some of the key PROBLEMS you're facing in your environment RIGHT NOW. Learn how to TOTALLY lock down machines. Learn how to enhance your environment with free, trial, and pay third party tools. And, what's more, learn how NOT to shoot yourself in the foot with all this new-found knowledge.
Some people have said that the advanced course was the MOST helpful for them, because it really tied together ACTION ITEMS they could walk away with and use immediately.

BRIEF OUTLINE

Part I (Option 1): Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM)
Microsoft has a secret weapon to ensure that your whole team works together when it comes to Group Policy management. In this session, you'll learn why a "Change management" for Group Policy is needed, and what AGPM brings to the table to make that happen. Learn what's new in AGPM 4.0 including advanced offline scenarios and more.

Part I (Option 2): Total Desktop Smackdown with Wioski (time permitting)
You have public computers, kiosk computers, and library computers. And you want to let the good guys run specific applications and get to specific network locations. And you want to keep the bad guys out. Group Policy does a pretty good job of delivering settings, but it doesn’t put the hardened shell you need on your computers for true bullet-proof computing. With Wioski (a free tool!), you’ve got the technology  you need. You just need to learn how it works !

Part II: Group Policy Tools
Microsoft offers a wealth of tools that each do a specific job to help you troubleshoot Group Policy problems. In this session, we'll walk through a toolbox full of goodies that you can use to streamline your processes, troubleshoot more easily, and get to the heart of what's ailing your systems

Part III: ADM/ADMX Files and Registry Punches
One of the key tasks that all administrators want to do is to push out their own Registry tweaks. This becomes a problem using Group Policy, because the interface is troublesome to work with. Instead, you can create ADM, ADMX files plus use free 3rd party tools to do the work for you, and you can recycle these files and share them with other administrators.

Part IV: Building Your Test Lab
Creating your GPOs directly in the live environment isn't such a hot idea. A lot can go wrong. For this reason, a best practice is to test your GPOs in a test lab first, then move them into production. You'll learn how to set up your test lab and make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot when you roll into production.

WHAT STUDENTS NEED

  •  Prerequisites for the Advanced class:
    • Students should first take the GP Essentials class or have equivalent knowledge. Students should be able to create and manage GPOs with link properties, understand how to perform security filtering, how to perform loopback processing, and how to create WMI filters. If students do not have knowledge of these concepts they may have trouble if they skip to the Advanced course.
  • About the Hands-On Labs
    • While not strictly required, this class is enhanced if the attendees each bring their own laptop to class. This is so we can perform real-world workshop experiments to solidify the concepts learned during the lecture and demonstrations. Each attendee should come to class with a laptop with at least the following specifications
      • Windows XP, Win7, or Vista installed as your laptop's base OS.
      • Local administrative logon rights required to your OS. NOT OPTIONAL.
      • You will be provided with images when you arrive on site the first day of class.
      • Pentium 4 at 1Ghz or greater. Pentium Mobile 1.3 Ghz is perfectly acceptable.
      • 4GB of RAM REQUIRED (sorry, folks, but you know you need it!). If you come to class with LESS than 4GB of RAM, you will not be able to do the labs. You will be “buddied up” with someone else to watch them do the labs.
      • 50GB free hard drive space. Yes, 50GB. (Please clean out the space you need BEFORE you come to class!).
      • USB 2.0 PORT so we can load the materials (Please don't bring a USB 1.0 laptop!).
      • Power supply and power cord! (Sometimes people forget!).
      • External mouse STRONGLY recommended. Seriously. Bring one.
Students should not bring laptops to class without these requirements, or else they cannot participate in the hands-on labs.
