Okay.. this tip of the week is short and sweet. It's about backing up GPOs.
Question: Are you? And if not, why not?
I ask people if they make "regular backups" and people tell me that they're taking "System State" backups.
Great, but when the emergency happens... if you wanted to "dig out" the GPO from those System State backups -- could you? It's not easy. You have to know the GUID of the now-deleted GPO. You have to do a non-authoritative restore and dig those files out and marry them back into a resuscitated GPO. In short -- painful.
So, what's the "not painful" way? Right-click over the "Group Policy Objects" node in GPMC and select backup. Then specify where to make that backup.
And, here's the best part: you can keep backing up as much as you want into that same directory. You won't ever overwrite anything in there. The folder structure contains directories of GUIDS which are created specifically so you cannot "screw it up" and overwrite previous data.
Genius!
So, if you're not backing up your GPOs.. please do so at LEAST once a week.. or more depending on how quickly things change in your neck of the woods. Do it today.
