Group Policy and IE8

Group Policy and IE8

Hey Team..

Hello from freezing Las Vegas. Well, the weather is warm, but I'm inside at a technical session at TEC (http://www.Tec2009.com) (Quest's AD / Identity show), and I'm wearing a sweater.

Yes, yes .. I should be paying attention. I know. I'm a bad boy, but wanted to get this over to you.

So, IE8 is now out. You can grab it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

The question I'm already getting is about GP control. Eric Johnson (One of our GP Answers 'short stops') and I sat down and figured it all out (so you don't have to.)

Here's what we've discovered:

() When you load IE8 on XP, you get an updated INETRES.ADM template.
() When you load IE8 on Vista, you get an updated INETRES.ADMX template.

That is to say, IE 8's control comes as policy, not GP Preferences. So don't expect a new pretty UI like what we've seen in GP Preferences control for IE 7.

You'll be able to control an armload of new IE 8 specific features; but I did note that the "filtering" capability in the updated GPMC fails to show ONLY IE8 settings. (My understanding is that the filtering capability is hardcoded; and therefore can't "understand" to show only IE 8 settings. Grr..)

I did some initial testing, and, well, the control of IE 8 seems much like IE 7. Without doing a full-on policy settings mapping, it appears that at least some crazy-old IE 5 and 6 policy settings will indeed affect IE 8.
And, as stated, there's an armload of NEW stuff that ONLY affects IE 8 (as expected.)

As for the GP Preferences, I did a quick test of the GP Preferences IE 7 settings against an IE 8 target. And... they didn't seem to take affect. That is, the "pretty IE 7 UI" which comes with the GP Preferences doesn't seem to affect IE8 at ALL. I tested this with both an Windows Server 2008 client with IE8 and an XP machine with IE8.

So, looks like Policy only. (Maybe there will be an option in the future?)

Here's the link to the IE8 specific GP stuff if you want to learn more:

Gotta run. I should really pay attention . And, later, let's hope I don't lose my airplane trip home at craps. Let's go "Hard 6 !!"
