    PLEASE HELP!!!!
I have setup a group policy to distribute adobe reader and the software

    First I get :-

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Application Management
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 301
    Date: 14/10/2005

    Time: 09:35:45
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: VMWARE1
    Description:
The install of application Adobe Reader 7.0 from policy Test failed. The
error was : The installation source for this product is not available.
Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Then
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Application Management
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 303
    Date: 14/10/2005

error was : The installation source for this product is not available.
Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------and lastly
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Userenv
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1085
    Date: 14/10/2005
    Time: 09:35:46
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: VMWARE1
    Description:
The Group Policy client-side extension Software Installation failed to
execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which made me think that the machine hasn't got permission to the MSI file so I added it in the ACL and checked its effective permissions which were all ok. I am baffled!! I have tried using the MSI package on another VMWare Server and it works fine. Also I have just tried the Group Policy Management Console and get the same errors!!

    Many Thanks In Advance!!

check out this post, the original poster found a solution to his own problem that Adobe Acrobat 7.someversion needed an .ini file as part of installation:
    http://www.gpanswers.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=672

I guess this must be documented somewhere

(I don't know any more about this, I just remembered I had seen it recently - it's amazing what a search button can do...)

    hi,
I am getting the same error. My situation being exact same, except the fact that I have different application(Skype) package. I get exactly the same errors as u got both on event logs and GPM.
I have tried to distribute the package by using "user configuration" ( both publish and assign) and it works fine. Only the "computer configuration" does not work.
I have searched the web like crazy. Somewhere I read that it has to do with asyncronous processing during logon. I have disabled the ansynchronous processing in GPO. But still the same error

any ideas how to deal with this

    thanks

I'm having the same problem here. I can publish a package through the "user configuration" and it works just fine. However when I assign a package through the "computer configuration" does not work. I get the dialog box that states it's installing the package (it just flashes on for a few seconds) but the application doesn't install.

Has anyone figured out a solution to this problem?

    Thanks,

    -John

How are you referencing the MSI package? For example, are you using an UNC mapping or just a straight drive letter mapping?

    example:

    \\server\share\folder\program.msi
    or
    c:\folder\program.msi

    Hey jdobiash,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm using the UNC ie. \\filesvr1\netinstall\advance.msi

I also made sure that the group Everyone has read permissions to the netinstall on Filesvr1 share.

    Thanks,

    -John

I'm not sure that Everyone group contains computers accounts. So, instead of Everyone, choose Authentificated Users (users + computers)

Is the computer account in the same domain as the fileserver? I have had some issues with computer assigned applications installing because the computer account could not be authenticated to file server in another domain. Cross domain computer authentication uses Kerberos, which is not yet intiallized properly at that stage of the boot process. I had to copy the package to a server in each domain to properly assign it to computers.

Hi All, I am encountering the same problem with a simple .msi assigned through the computer configuration. I have a single DC and two member servers that I am testing against. one member, the application installs just fine. The second member always fails with the message "the system cannot find the file specified". I ran the installer log and I get the message: "The script file for application [app name] from policy [name] cannot be copied" [path to the script files]

I can map a drive to the shared folder [sysvol], I've tried changing the installer creds from local system to admin, I can copy the msi manually and I've checked the permissions on the shares for SYSTEM - all appears well except for the deploment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
