Default Recommended way to install an exe

I'm a bit new to gp/ad administration, so please pardon me if this is a foolish question. From what I've read an msi file is the only direct way to install software with group policy, but you could script a startup script to run an exe. From my reading that, it seems it really would be recommended to use an msi to install software. Is that true, or does scripting an exe work as well?

If an msi is not available for the desired product, what is the best way to create one?

    I found this:
Repackaging - Converting an EXE to MSI

I was looking for much the same as I was experimenting with using the Software Installation part of GPO. I have used a similar app before and it did the job. There are also some good links at the bottom of that article.

    Good luck!
