Default Manually installed software but want to upgrade using GPO

Hello,

Hope this is the correct place to post this question...

I have installed a piece of software manually and want to know if it's possible to upgrade that software using GPO. I am running a 2003 AD. The software will be a computer assigned GP. I tried to just do a install of the MSI as an upgrade and what happens is it uninstalls what is currently installed. For this software, really don't want to uninstall the previous version and then install a new version because of configurations...

Is this possible, what I want to do? From what I've read, it's not possible.

Thanks

Default Right..

Underneath the hood are MSI product codes. If those match, GP "deletes" then "reinstalls." Actually, it's not GP, it's "msiexec."

So there's not a lot you can do here.

MOSTLY.. configurations seem to stick around.

For instance, I've done this test using Office and it seems to work a-ok.

But, of course, your mileage may vary.

Sorry for checking in so late...I'm working on this on the side. Can you point me to a doc. about this? I've tried searching but I haven't found anything useful. The only thing I did find is from Microsoft about group policy: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...09X1106979.pdf

Does anyone know if what was mentioned an Installshield thing or a Windows Installer thing?

Thanks
