I am trying to deploy 2003 SP1 using Group Policy. I have tried several times with different servers and it keeps failing. Here is what I did.

I extracted the files for the service pack
I shared out the I386 directory for the SP and set appropriate permissions.
I created an OU for Services Pack installations
I created the assigned policy on that OU that points to the share.
I moved 2 servers into the OU.
After giving enough time for the policy to apply, I rebooted the servers one at a time.
As the OS was coming up it began the install of the service pack.

After about 10 min I got the following errors.

Product: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (1033) -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package
    vendor. Action AdminRunSetupMin, location:
    \\tarantula\2003_SP1_i386\update\Update.exe, command: /q /z /msi

The Group Policy client-side extension Software Installation failed to
execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension.

Failed to apply changes to software installation settings. Software changes could not be applied. A previous log entry with details should exist. The error was : %1603

The install of application Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (1033) from policy SP1 Install failed. The error was : %1603

    What am I missing?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Chris

I'm guessing there REALLY IS something wrong with the downloaded SP.

    1) Kill the current directory
    2) Re-download it, and re-unpack it
    and
    3) Re-try the deployment.

    Hopefully that does it.
