Hello People, I need your help here, what I need to do is

create a shutdown script that Group Policy is aware of.

Once the user attempts to shutdown there laptop for the

day (WinXP Pro), they get a Popup Message that says

something like, Please be patient while we check for

windows updates. In GP win updates would be disabled

with the client pc pulling them from the centrally stored

updates on the W2k server. We run the script to check

the updates on the pc versus what the server holds and

then either shutdown or start the update. I know WSUS

can accomplish this but I don't have the 6GB required to

run/install WSUS on this server. Any help you could

    give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

you plan on having the updates stored on a server somehow (how is not clear). Surely if you are doing this then you are already taking up loads of space for these, and WSUS would not be much worse?

Don't forget, you can configure WSUS to only download relevant approved updates, so until you approve on eyou only get metadata, and you can ignore all the languages and applications which are not suited to your business.

How about a spare PC to run WSUS on? How big is the organisation?

Could you not do this with shutdown script set in GP? Or is that the obvious part and you need help in writing a script to do what you describe?

I think the separate Workstation makes a lot of sense as was mentioned especially with the the updates themselves taking up space. Still I would like to know how to write a shutdown script to do silent installs of updates. Not to shutdown the workstation but to sense the user is shutting down and stops to check the updates first without giving the user an option to cancel or delay. This wold be nice to know in the absense of WSUS.

    Thanks in advance
