    depends on what your classing as activity.... Something like a broadcast storm probably could (hence asking about managed switches).
    What OS are you running on the server?

    2 DCs are 2003r2, Exchange is currently 2003 on WS2003 with a 2007SP3 on 2008r2 in the works. Switches aren't managed, and are ancient.

    So, I'm not 100% sure this is what resolved the issue, but I tweaked a setting in McAfee VSE to try and resolve a different issue with AutoCAD and low and behold gpupdate appears to work as expected no. Still having issues with some of my GPOs but at least forcing a gpupdate doesn't result in an error.

    The McAfee setting I tweaked was "Prevent svchost executing non-Windows executables"
