GPO only applied to locally logged on users

I bought the book Group Policy, Profiles and Intellimirror because I did not know how to solve a certain problem.
Started immeadiately with the examples. But at page 32 I was confronted with exactly the problem for which I bought the book!!

The most simple GPO is ONLY applied to locally logged on users.
I followed the book-examples precisely but when I login via the network to the DC, nothing happens..

I have: windows 2003 (no Servicepack) and windows XP ( no Servicepack) running in VMware which runs on an XP machine with SP2 installed.

Can anybody please help me with this?

The problem has been solved, I forgot to issue the DNS address of the server on the client :S
