hey everyone, im new to this site and have a question regarding folder redirection i set a policy to redirect the application data folder to a \\server\share localtion. ive since removed the policy, but whenever a user logs off the machine that the policy was applied, i get a window verifying files are being synchronized. im confused as to why this happens since the link to the gpo has been disabled. ive even deleted the gpo thinking this might help but to no avail. i ran gpupdate /force to make sure the most current policy is being processed but that still does nothing. any help would be appreciated.

    thanks

the machine in question is xp pro sp2

I'm guessing you're using XP. I'm guessing XP's Offline Files needs to be kicked in the head.

How many machines do you have?

OK I Realize this is an old post but I've been looking for the answer to this same problem for days now. Only there is a strange new twist... or old bump... or something. And yes I would say the problem has to be XP.

After several days of trying to get folder redirection to work for our network I noticed the following.

    1) XP must be FORCED at the end of a long stick to update GPOs... Done... Except it doesn't seem to update anything relating to folder redirection...

    2) XP refuses to let go of GPOs which no longer exist... At least not the ones which pertain to FOLDER REDIRECTION.

The main problem I am having now is that when XP tries to Sync with the server it tries three times in three locations. Initially I tried setting the redirection up using a share user$ physically located on the server at e:\user The only problem was that no matter how I set up the Share and NTFS permissions (Even when I used the settings listed by Microsoft) only Administrators were able to sync up. Oddly however on the creation of a new user account the end users directory structure was created by the system (with accurate permissions) but never updated after that. Rather the Sync window poped up and asked for a user name and password.

In an effort to curb this I decided to nest the share one more layer deep... e:\redirect\users2 Shared as users2$ At that point I made the apparent mistake of deleting the GPO and modifying the default domain GPO since that is where I was linking it anyway. Now oddly enough All the user profiles are attempting three sync jobs in relation to the folder redirection... E$, user$, and user2$ .

The actual folder redirection seems to work but the first two on the list just will not quit. They don't exist anywhere in the GPOs and only the Administrator accounts are able to use them. Even when a new user account is created all three entries show up. Which now has me wondering weather the problem is the server... or XP having been polluted with the old GPO... To say nothing of...

WHERE THE HECK DID THIS DIRECT REFERENCE TO E$ COME FROM?!?!

One Server 2008 running one domain
    One 2000 professional machine
    Four XP-Professional machines
    Two Vista Machines
    and for the grand finale...
30 users in 12 groups 8 of whom believe they should be qualified administrators but need to be bailed out of their own home computing messes at least twice a month.

Hence the need for some serious GPO action in the first place not the least of which is folder redirection.

So now how do I get all these machines to stop trying to process the two entries that don't actually exist?

Hi Jayson, I have resolved this issue several times using the following method: resetting the client side cache.

Step 1, make sure your offline files cache is up to date on the server

    Step 2
    -----
    (from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738)
an Offline Files reset can be performed using the following procedure:

    1. In Folder Options, on the Offline Files tab, press CTRL+SHIFT, and then click Delete Files. The following message appears:
The Offline Files cache on the local computer will be re-initialized. Any changes that have not been synchronized with computers on the network will be lost. Any files or folders made available offline will no longer be available offline. A computer restart is required.

Do you wish to re-initialize the cache?
    2. Click Yes two times to restart the computer.

    hope that helps
