The first step will be determining where the problem is coming from: Are the users able to connect to the share manually? Have one of the users log in and try to access \\servername\sharename and see if they still have issue. If they are able to access the share, try manually mapping it to a drive letter. This will let us eliminate the share as issue.
Next, check your setting in your Group Policy Preference. For the action, I like Update a lot more that Create. If you're mapping X:\ and the user already has mapped X:\ somewhere else, Update will change their mapping to what you want it to be. In the Common tab, make sure that "Run in logged-on user's security context (user policy option)" is checked. If it isn't, the computer is trying to map the drive as System and it will, most likely, fail unless the share is available to the computer's AD account.
If you're still having issues, attach the output from a gpresult /h report.html and I'll take a look at the policy that is applying to the computer.
