Hello,
I am working on a problem with folder redirection and wondering if anyone out there can offer any help. I am supporting a lab with about 25 machines; these are win XP, SP3.

We redirect the Desktop folder and the My Documents folder via group policy for all users. In this lab we have an intermittent problem that pops up every day on at least 5 to 10 machines, each day on different machines with no consistent pattern.

The user will enter their ID and password and log in. Some time during login process the desktop folder redirection freezes and the machine is left with just the desktop background with no icons, no taskbar or start button. They have to power it off and try again.

I have been researching the issue and came up with a few technical details. First in the event viewer, App log I see ID 107

"Failed to perform redirection of folder My Pictures. The folder is configured to be redirected from <C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\My Pictures> to <\\SERVER\home$\students\USER\My Documents\My Pictures>. The following error occurred: The directory name is invalid. "

And id 1085
"The Group Policy client-side extension Folder Redirection failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension."

Also, I have found out that folder redirection is driven by a dll called Fdeploy.dll. You can turn on logging for Fdeploy.dll and I have done that. The fdeploy log captures each folder redirect during the login process, it is very verbose so I will refrain from posting it here, however each time it captures a redirect it ends with this line.
"The following error occurred: %%267"

I have read on the web that some people believe that the Fdeploy.dll from SP3 could be the culprit. For an experiment I replaced that .dll with the one from sp2.. This did not make the situation any better. I ran it like that for a few weeks but have since reimaged the lab and they are back at sp3 level.

Would anyone care to comment or have a solution. Thank You

Chris

I met Jeremy last week during a specops presentation. He gave a great lecture.
Thanks Jeremy !
