First my apologies for the long post...

(Note: this is all 2003 servers and XP SP2 clients)

    1. First let's talk profiles on a Terminal Server, I don't want roaming profiles on my TS's (at all) so I enabled the settings as specified Jeremey's book (loopback replace etc.)... But I noticed that when I logged onto the TS with my user account, my desktop settings were there! When I logged off, the profile was NOT saved to the c:\doc a sett folder... So my assumtion was that the GPO worked (doesn't allow the roaming profile to be saved on the HD) but then again it still showed me my roaming desktop which I don't want on this TS... Then I found another GPO setting to the effect of "allow only local profiles"... This worked for me, I now get a new local profile on the TS, but it leaves a copy of that local profile on the HD in the C:\doc and settings folder... This I don't want! When my user w/ roaming profile logs onto a TS, I want them to get a fresh profile each time, and then have that profile deleted when they log off.

    2. OK changing gears here a little bit... My understanding of roaming profiles is this... Logon - Profile is loaded from UNC specified in the user account (copied down to local HD under c:\doc and settings\%username%), Any changes made to this profile are saved to the local disk until log off time.. At log off changes are copied up to the server \\UNC-Path... Therefore - If I were to use a 3rd party GPO tool to copy a file into the users profile (Think "My Data Sources") I should be able to specify to copy that file to the local profile on the HD (c:\doc and settings\%username%\path) and then at thier next loggoff that file will be uploaded into thier roaming profile ???? Or am I way off base and need to send the file to the \\server\profiles\%username\path ???

    3. Changing gears again! We have several users that have both Desktop and Laptop machines, and of course, they want seperate profiles, but they want to keep the same username for use on both machines... Even with Folder Re-direction in place, they are still putting files on thier desktop that they only want on the current machine they are logged in on, and don't want that file to transfer over to the machine (User 1 places txt.xls on desktop of laptop PC, then loggs off and log's onto desktop, they don't want to see txt.xls on the desktop machine), HOWEVER, I want to use roaming profiles for backup purposes (IE if one of the machines go down, all the users settings and files are out on a server from roaming profiles and folder re-direct)... Can anyone think of ANYTHING I might be able to do, to make machine specific roaming profiles for the same username?

Whew,, OK I'm done for now I promise

    1. There is a further policy to delete profiles on logoff, this is often used in TS environments. Make sure your default profile is really good.

    2. Basically this is right.

    3. I can't think of a way right now. Tell them not to put things on their desktop. Create a nice local folder if they realy need to keep things on each machine, and provide a shortuct to the folder on the desktop. Better still get them to keep everything on the server and use offline folder synch. You could choose to synch different folders on the two machines (or maybe none on the desktop)
