    Good afternoon all,

I am new to the forum and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tommy Rotunno and I am a Network Engineer in Langhorne PA.

I have a windows 2003 Active Directory domain with the "folder redirection" group policy enabled. The way I have it set is for my documents, I have the setting set for "Basic-Redirect everyone's folder to the same location", for Target location I have "create a folder for each user under the root path" and for Root Path I have"\\servername\private". It works great with all my XP Pro machines but not 1 Vista machine is working. Does anyone have any ideas or know why it might not be working? What am I missing here?

    Cheers,
    Tommy

Hi Tommy - and welcome to GPanswers.com!

First of all: does the client/user receive the policy at all? Check using GPRESULT command og RSoP.msc.

Second of all: Are you managing the group policies in your environment using a Windows Vista management station?

Yeah I have a test Vista machine and when I run a gpresult the policy shows applied, not filtered out. And I am managing group policies from a Windows 2003 domain controller.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Cheers!
    Tommy

As soon as you introduce Windows Vista machines in the environment you should use Vista to administer your group policies (using built-in GPMC.MSC). If you have installed Vista SP1 you'll need the RSAT toolkit, but that's not public until late march 2008.

Please try using a GPO created from a Vista machine for administering other Vista machines. Also, check the eventvwr after loading policies to check for any errors.

So instead of using our domian controller administer ALL group policies from the Vista machine or just create them from the Vista machine?

    Thank you!

Administer all GPOs from a Vista with GPMC (without SP1 - or with SP1 and the RSAT software which is not available until end of march 2008 or so).

I wiped out my "folder redirection" policy on the server and started over and created it from my Vista Machine. Once I had it setup I did a gpupdate/force and received the below message.

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\trotunno>cd\

    C:\>gpupdate/force
    Updating Policy...

User Policy update has completed successfully.

The following warnings were encountered during user policy processing:

The Group Policy Client Side Extension Folder Redirection was unable to apply on
e or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup o
r user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish complet
ely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow
    startup and boot performance.
Computer policy could not be updated successfully. The following errors were enc
    ountered:

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\coll
    ages.local\sysvol\collages.local\Policies\{31B2F34 0-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}
\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings
may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and
could be caused by one or more of the following:
    a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
    b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller
has not replicated to the current domain controller).
    c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

To diagnose the failure, review the event log or invoke gpmc.msc to access infor
    mation about Group Policy results.

    Any ideas?

Ok - first try restarting the machine - what happens? Does it work?

If not please post the Event ID you receive in the Event Viewer - source and number and error message.

I rebooted and here is the error in event viewer

Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Documents" to "\\officenas01\private\trotunno\Documents".
    Redirection options=9231.

    Event ID=502
    Source= Folder redirection

The good thing is that it did replicate to my domain controller. I feel like I am so close to getting this to work and I appreciate your advise and guidance.

    Tommy
