Angry Setting printers with Group Policy Preferences

I have multiple shared printers at multiple locations within my Server 2003 domain. All the classroom computers are in single OU (named Classrooms...no point for originality). Can I use GPP to set a default printer based on the computer name? I have tried with security groups containing the computer accounts but have not had any success.

What server version is your print server or are your printers on the same domain. I don't know if you have it with Server 2003, but is there print management under services? On my network, I've added printers to GPOs and set the security of those GPOs to the different users or machines which need the printers.

    Does that make any sense?

That link you might find helpful as well, different to how I do it but still works...

Wrt using groups in GPPs, from what I have found is that you MUST browse (click the browse button) to find the AD group, you cannot simply type the name of the group in the Group box- the GPP must get the SID of the group and the only way I can figger out how to do this is to browse for the AD groups. A new textbox is then automatically added to the GPP with the group's SID.

You can use computer names in the Targetting Editor, IP ranges, groups:
(Text)Boxes in the Computer Name targeting items accept single character (?) and multiple character (*) wildcards.
I would suggest you use a just IP range targeting to do what you want! It works really nice.
