Ok, I'm sure this a completely retarded question, but I have to swallow my pride and ask...
I have a win2k3 DC that is still running IE6. I have several client PC's on the domain that are still running IE 6 and their settings are managed by GPO. Recently, we deployed some new PC's that are running IE7 and we've run into a few odd issues. We won't get into those issues here because they aren't related to GPOs. At any rate, my troubleshooting of these issues has led me to install the Administrative Templates for Internet Explorer 7 so I can manage the settings on these new machines with IE7. So I downloaded the msi from MS and installed it on the DC to C:\Program Files\microsoft Group Policy.
Now here's where I get confused. As I said, I have several IE6 machines that are managed via GPO so obviously I have several GPOs that utilize the IE6 version of the INETRES.ADM file. But the Administrative Templates for Internet Explorer 7 file is also called INETRES.ADM. So I was going to copy the new IE7 INETRES.ADM to the %systemroom%\inf folder where the rest of the ADM files are located. I wanted to do this just to be consistent so all my ADM files are in that same folder. But if I do that, I'll over-write the old IE6 INETRES.ADM file. Is that safe to do? what will happen to all of my GPO's that have settings based on that old IE6 version of INETRES.ADM?
Thanks in advance!
