I'm running a 2003 Native domain. I'm using the GPMC to make my AD changes (v1.0.2).

For a specific GPO when I click the settings tab I get the following error:
An error occurred while generating report:
An unknown error occurred while the HTML report was being created.

This GPO has nothing defined except for User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Maintenance -> Security -> Security Zones and Content Ratings. There I have defined 2 local intranet sites - *.ourdomain.local and http://intranet.companyname.com.

I can reproduce this error easily. Just add another GPO with the same settings and it will either immediately give the error or if not then, then as soon as it is linked to an OU. The GPO will still work and apply to PCs but any GP Results on any device that uses this GPO will get the error.

Can anyone else reproduce this problem? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Try creating the GPO from a Windows Server 2003 machine as your management station.. or maybe XP/SP2.

I can reproduce this error only for when creating IE Security Zone Policies. I get this error building the GPO either from XP SP-2 or from Windows 2003 SP-1.

Creating a new GPO from scratch does not work for me.

BTW. This is my first time on GPanswers.com

    Mark,
Welcome to GPAnswers. I still have this problem. What I've done is put the security zones in their own GPO. If I need to do any reporting I disable the GPO, gpupdate, run my reports, and then re-enable the GPO. Crude, but it works.

I found out the error does not occur when I use IE 6 instead of 7 when setting security zones.

I only made IE security zone and sites changes in the same GPO.

    Hello,

i also have the same reproducable error in the gpo administration snapin. Following szenario produces the error.

Be patient, i have to translate it from german into english...

As long as following option is selected, i'll get the error
"unknown error while creating html report"

    configuration:
GPO -> user group policy -> windows configuration -> internet explorer maintainance -> security -> security zones and content filter -> import current settings for security zones and privacy

Otherwise if I select the option "do not customize securty settings and privacy", which means do not import automatically current settings, then the html report will be generated.

    Workstation: Windows XP SP2
    Internet-Explorer: v7

i get the same problem. i also have a GPO set up just for the security settings, and even if i create a brand new GPO, and only have 1 website listed as a restricted site, i will get that error. i have multiple GPOs setup for this, some OU's have more or less restrictions than others.

MarkF pointed out that it works under IE6 but not IE7. it has only recently started giving me this error, and we only recently switched over to IE7. could having installed IE7 on the server be the cause of the problem?

The problem is if you edit the group policy from a Windows XP SP2 machine with IE7 installed. You won't have the reporting problem if you edit from same machine with IE6 installed.

That's a bit of a problem if you're using WSUS and keep your systems up to date.
