have your tried XP... and say, NOT Win7.. or vice versa?
Just checking .. maybe this policy just doesnt work anymore in Win7.
A am looking for answers to this (still) and proceeding thru the book when something occurred to me.
The GPO has added the proper command to the registry:
HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run/policies/explorer/run
Could it be it IS running but before Explorer runs so it comes and goes so fast that you cant see it do so?
Is there a way to put a delay into the application of a GPO to wait for something else to load or for a specific number of seconds?

Yes, I have the recommended setup and in my case it is configured as such
Win 2008 R2 Hyper-V server on my network
and then on a private (internal to the hyper-v server and OFF my production network) network
the DC (Win 2008R2)
The Management Workstation: Win 7
two client workstations one Win7 and one WinXP
All of them are fully patched and up to date (well as of a month or so ago) and everything else works just fine just not this one. And on BOTH VMs
I even checked the corresponding "run" registry hive and the command to run calc.exe is there, it just never shows up. It is as if it DOES run but then quits before I can see it. There is nothing strange in event log to indicate errors either.
I may change my handle to "flummoxed"
thanks for the quick reply...
Good news.
I figured out the problem.
Better news.. I shot a video of it, and put it on youtube:

personally, i wouldve preferred to be able to just -read- the answer... for others, who, like-me, would be ok without the video... the answer is simple:
%windir% is not a valid way to get to the windows-directory in this particular instance...
if you use a fully-descriptive-path, like c:\windows\system32\calc.exe it till just work as advertised...
also, personally, i wouldve put this in the -errata- section for the book (i looked there first before coming here)... the errata would read : ----AAACK---- apparently, it IS in the errata... it is just that it is the third-item... ok, then, personally, i would organize the errata in numerical-order of page-numbers - so that i would see the errata for pg.63 before, rather than after, the errata for pg.127...
ok - thats it for me... thanx for having this here - and allowing me to add my 2-cents...h.
